I found the findings from "The truth about lying in online dating" quite disconcerting, however, I wonder if the results would be different if the researchers had sampled some of the free dating sites like OkCupid and Plentyoffish.com. Although, they did state that users aged 21-30 were overrepresented in the sample, a representative sample of individuals in that are range are not likely to be on a paid dating site. In addition, I wonder what constraints would be available to prevent prevarication on the scale that it occurs in online dating. I am also interested in finding out what methods individuals use to determine if the profile that they are viewing is deceptive. There are sites like tineye.com and google image search that can assist individuals in comparing pictures with others online to determine if there is duplicity in some way, but more advanced methods will be needed. Likely, an incentive system must be used to create a reward for individuals to be truthful online. Having individuals link their online dating profiles to their facebook or linked-in accounts to verify some of the data posted could be a step that online dating companies take in the future.
